Thomas J. Allen, a well known Winterset resident for the last 20 years, died unexpectedly at his home here last Thursday, Nov. 26 as a result of a heart attack. He was 57 years of age.
Mr. Allen was born at Lakeview Heights, Mo. On Sept. 7, 1907, a son of Thamer and Anna Morton Allen. He came to Winterset about 20 years ago, as a buyer of logs, and he soon engaged in the sawmill operation here. In recent years he had entered the auctioneering and antique businesses also.
He was a member of the Baptist church in Missouri.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, the former Easter M. Jeffs, to whom he was married in 1958; four children by a previous marriage, Mrs. Irene Whittle of Woodbine, Mrs. Geraldine Monroe of Blue Springs, Mo., Samuel Allen of Logan, and Tommy Allen of Winterset; four step-children, Jack Jeffs of Winterset, Mrs. Joann Wiley of Adel, Everett Jeffs of Indianola and Mrs. Wilma Kerns of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; and 12 step-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Johnny Allen; and two sisters, Mrs. Jose Lout and Mrs. Lola Knox, all of Cole Camp, Mo.
Funeral services were held here Saturday from the Collins Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. William E. Bowles, pastor of the First Christian church. Services were held also on Sunday from the Scrivner-Stevenson Funeral home in Stover, Mo. Burial was made in Brushy cemetery at Stover.
