Death of Mrs. Martha Withrow

Mrs. Martha Withrow, one of our most highly respected citizens, died at her home in the north part of town last Saturday morning, aged 77 years. The funeral occurred from the home Tuesday at two p.m., conducted by Rev. J. H. White. Interment took place in the Rock City cemetery.

Martha Stewart Witherow was born in County Derry, Ireland, in the year 1832, the exact day not being known by the family. She made profession of her faith in the Savior at an early age and united with the church in her native land.

She married William Witherow, and they came to America, settling in Guernsey county Ohio, in 1851. There three children were born, Margaret, John and James. In the year 1881 the family came to Iowa and settled in Madison county. The father died on February 26, 1890, the elder son on December 5, 1898, and the daughter on June 26, 1905. The mother passed away on January 30, 1909.

Since coming to Iowa Mrs. Witherow has been a member of the Winterset United Presbyterian church. In the later years of her life bodily infirmity and affliction have prevented her presence at the house of God, yet in her affliction even God has blessed her, and in patience and contentment of the soul she waited for the coming of her Lord, and at the last quietly fell asleep in Jesus. Her going reminds us that “to depart and to be with Christ is very far better.”

The funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. J. H. White, and burial made in the Winterset cemetery. She is survived by one son and ---- grandchildren.
