Obituary

A. J. Hoisington, son of Joab and Hulda Hoisington, was born in Jefferson county, New York, Sept. 12, 1816, and died in Madison county, Iowa, Jan. 27, 1909, at the age of 92 years, 4 months and 15 days. At the age of two years he removed, with his parents, to Wayne county, N. Y., and there he grew to manhood. At the age of twenty-three he removed to Washington county, Mich., where he was engaged in farming until 1843, when he moved to Quincy, Ill., where he was also engaged in farming.

On Dec. 19, 1845, he was married to Elizabeth Limb, who was born in Longsutton, Lincolnshire, England, on Dec. 21, 1829. They immediately went to housekeeping on the same farm. In 1848 they moved to Hillsboro, Montgomery county, Ill., where they resided on a farm until 1855, when they moved to Greene county, Ia., where he entered 240 acres of land and improved the same. In 1859 they moved to Crawford township, Madison county, removing in 1869 to his present home in Union township, where he has been a prosperous farmer. At the time of his death he was owner of about 600 acres of land.

To this union were born nine children, Isaac Dwifer, Andrew Jackson, Mrs. Mary Rhodes, John, Mrs. Victoria Johnson, Mrs. Elizabeth Etchison, Sarah Matilda, Albert Lincoln and James Limb.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Rhodes of Brockway, Neb., Mrs. Victoria Johnson of Union township, Albert L. of Lennox, S. Dak., and James L. of Ord, Neb.

Those present at the funeral were Mrs. Johnson and family, Albert L. and family, James L., Elizabeth Hardenburger of Auburn, Neb., daughter of John Hoisington, Clyde and Carl Etchison and Mrs. Leota Simpson, children of Elizabeth Etchison.

Mr. Hoisington, at the age of 23, united with the Baptist church of Quincy, Ill., and in 1848, by a letter, he united with the Methodist church of which he was a consistent member until his death. He and his faithful wife have been pioneers both in building up the church and this part of the country.

He was always of a rugged, robust nature. This combined with great ambition made his long life useful and filled his later years with pleasant occupations. He maintained a remarkable degree of health, no particular disease marking his illness. His last hours were peaceful. These joys are supplemated and brightened by the exquisite beauty, radiant glory and the brilliant splendor of this city, which is the dwelling place of our God.

The funeral services were held at the home Feb. 1st, 1909, conducted by Rev. J. E. Clearwater. Short services were also held at the church, after which interment was made in the Jefferson cemetery.
