Old Winterseter Dies in Oklahoma

Word was received here Saturday of the death at Mountain View, Okla., of John McMillan, formerly of this place. Mr. McMillan was for over thirty years a resident of this place. A few years ago with his wife he moved to Colorado where he expected to spend his declining days in a less rigorous climate. Not being entirely suited there he moved about a year ago to Mountain View, Oklahoma. Something like six weeks ago he took a bad cold from which he never recovered. He was confined to his bed about six days, passing away Monday evening, December the 14th, at six o’clock. The remains were interred at that place on the following Thursday.

John McMillan, son of James and Elenor McMillan was born in Allegheny county, Penn., August 25th, 1816. The family moved to Brown county, Ohio, in 1818. He professed religion and joined the Christian church at Russelville, Ohio, in November, 1836. He was married to Harriet M. Glevze on the 7th of October, 1837. He was ordained an Elder by Elders Alexander McClain and Melvyn D. Baker on October 9th, 1843, and began preaching in his home church at Russelville. In 1856, with his family, came to Illinois where he built up several churches. Removed to Iowa in 1869.

To him and his wife were born eleven children, only four of whom survive him. Two died in infancy. He received eight of his children into the church and baptized them, besides five sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law.

He is survived by his aged wife and companion for more than 71 years who will be 90 years old on the 7th day of next January, one son and two daughters.
