HELEN COMP, Winterset

Helen Comp, 92, of Winterset, Iowa, entered eternal rest Friday, March 12, 2010, at Winterset Care Center South in Winterset. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Rev. Bill Branson officiating. The body has been cremated, with the cremains being interred in the Winterset Cemetery.

Helen was born June 19, 1917, in Peru, Iowa, to Frank and Vern (Stultz) Cummins. She lived on a farm in Scott Township until after graduation from Peru High School in 1935. Helen then attended Simpson College for one year, having studied business and accounting. On June 7, 1942 she married Russell Comp in Carthage, Mo. Helen’s employment through her life included being a profit clerk, an accounting clerk for the federal government during World War II, homemaker, seamstress, and manager of a dress shop in Winterset.

Helen had been a lifetime resident of Madison County and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as a dining room chairman for 24 years, communion steward for three years, served on the Board of Trustees for three years, and made the “Joy” banner that hangs in the sanctuary. She had been involved with several local clubs, being a past president of Colonial Guild and Child Welfare Clubs. Helen volunteered wherever she was needed. Poetry was her main hobby. Many of her poems were used by lodges, clubs, schools, and for memorials. She also loved music, especially playing the organ, and gardening.

Helen is survived by her son, Gary (Shirley) Allen of Winterset; daughters, Valerie (Ron) Kerns of Winterset and Elecia (Dan) Henke of Winterset; daughter-in-law, Becky Comp of Dayton; sister, Doris Sorensen of Tulsa, Okla.; sister-in-law, Blanche Cummins of Bloomington, Minn.; grandchildren — Bart Kerns, Kim Kerns, Troy Henke, Jeff Allen, Brian Allen, and Tony Comp; and great-grandchildren — Jessie, Mason, London, Brooke, Colt, Michael, Sam, Max, Will, and Kalli.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Vern Cummins; husband, Russell Comp; son, Terry Comp; and brother, George Cummins.

The family will receive friends one hour before service time. Memorials may be directed to her family for a future designation.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
