Death of Pleasant Brittain

Another of the pioneers of Madison county has passed away in the person of P. C. Brittain of Madison township. Mr. Brittain died at his home Tuesday night of paralysis. For fifty-six years he has been a resident of this county and he has always been one of her foremost citizens; a man of highest character holding the greatest respect of all who knew him. He was a member of Company A, 39th Iowa Infantry and served three years during the civil war. He was in the battles of Parker’s Cross Roads, Alatoona Pass and others, and he was with Sherman in his famous march to the sea.

In 1866 he was married to Miss Sarah Cox and to this union were born six children as follows: Mrs. Ida Goin, Mrs. Jennie Daniels, Mrs. Ruth Davis, Mrs. Susie Trester, Mrs. Alice Trester and Mr. Joe Brittain, all of whom are living. At the time of our going to press the time of the funeral was not fixed as some of the children had not yet arrived. The remains will be interred in the cemetery near the old home in Jefferson township.

Obituary

Pleasant C. Brittain was born in Buchanan county, Mo., September 20, 1842, where he lived until March 1852, at which time he came to Madison county, Ia.

He enlisted in the civil war August 20, 1862, being a member of Company A, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was in several important battles and was with Sherman on his march to the sea.

He was married to Miss Sarah Cox Oct. 18, 1866. To this union six children were born, namely: Ruth B. Davis, of Johnstown, Nebr.; Mrs. Mary A. Trester, of Winterset; Susan Trester, Holyoke, Minn., Jennie B. Daniels, Mt. View, Okla; Ida M. Gowin, Winterset; and Joseph E. Brittain, Earlham. All are living and were present at the funeral except Jennie.

Mr. Brittain became a member of the United Presbyterian church about thirty years ago. During all these years he was a faithful member and a loyal supporter, and he will be greatly missed by the church.

He died Nov. 4, 1908 of apoplexy. He was a good neighbor, a kind father, a devoted husband and a faithful friend, and in his death Mrs. Brittain has lost a husband who has traveled with her life’s weary road, the children have lost a father to whose councils they have often listened; we have all lost a friend.

The funeral sermon was preached at the Friends church in Earlham by Rev. E. A. Elliott. His body was laid to rest in the Earlham cemetery.
