Sarah Calhoun was born in New York City April 4, 1838 and departed this life April 16, 1914. She was married to Joseph Steele in New York City, May 7, 1862.

They soon removed to New Jersey, from which state they emigrated to Madison county, Iowa, in 1868, settling on the homestead in Webster township which was their home until eleven years ago when the farm work becoming too heavy for them they removed to Greenfield, Iowa which has since been their home.

There were five sons born to her; John, who is pastor of the Congregational church of Meckling, South Dakota, Joseph, is pastor of the Congregational church of Kingsley, Iowa, William, a merchant at Algona, Iowa, James, who resides near Macksburg, Iowa, and Milton of Green River, Utah. Besides her husband and sons, she leaves one brother in New York City.

Mrs. Steele was a lady whom all who knew her loved and respected. Of gentle and modest disposition, her life was in her duties to her family and church.

She was a charter member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian church of Madison county, organized in Webster township many years ago and which was transformed into the Congregational church about 1882. After moving to Greenfield she united with the Presbyterian church at that place.

Mrs. Steele was a pioneer resident of this county and knew all the vicissitudes of pioneer life and labors. Her home was always open to friend and stranger alike in those early days and many a one will remember her going so quietly about her familiar duties. It was a pleasure to visit there. The splendid family of sons she reared to manhood attests to her ability as a home maker and counselor. She has gone to her reward. Well done good and faithful servant.
