BENJAMIN WARREN NORTON

Benjamin Warren Norton was born in Industry, Maine, July 3, 1836 and died at his home in Winterset, Iowa, April 21, 1914, aged 77 years, nine months and 18 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Julia J. Daggett of Industry, Maine, June 23, 1859. To this union were born three children, Sarah E., now Mrs. Hodgkins of Chesterville, Maine; David M. of Sanborn, Iowa, and Mrs. Emily D. Croson of Winterset.

Brother Norton was representative in the state legislature of Maine and town treasurer several years. In March 1886, he moved to Iowa, and located on a farm near Sanborn, O'Brien county, where he remained a successful farmer until too feeble to farm. He came to Winterset about six years ago. He was converted to Christ in early manhood and immediately united with the M. E. church. Father Norton was a kind and loving companion and cheerfully bore his share of life's burdens. As a father, he was affectionate and he deemed it his duty to “rear his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord”:. During his lingering illness, which was unusually painful, he was patient and kind and the comforting presence of God was with him.

He leaves to mourn his departure, a loving wife, three children, four grand children and one brother, James M. Norton of Anson, Maine. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, April 23rd, conducted by his pastor, Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt, and interment made in Rock City cemetery.
