Mrs. Frederick Mott

Mary J. Mott left us last Friday afternoon March 16th at 5 p. m., aged 62 years. She was born July 25, 1844, near Fredricktown, Ohio. She was the daughter of Shelton and Minerva Best. Her father died when she was about four years of age and her mother subsequently was married to John Leonard with whose family she lived as a daughter until in the year 1861, July 25th she was married to Frederick Mott at Winterset, lowa.

For some two years prior thereto she attended the Baptist school at Pella, lowa, was converted there and joined the Baptist church.

During Mr. Mott's absence in the army for three years, she again become a member of the Leonard family. On Mr. Mott's return she and her husband resumed housekeeping. She has been a faithful companion of her husband in all the vicissitudes of his checkered life. In her religious life she has adorned the profession of faith in Christ by her constant attendance on the services other church and by her zeal in all the duties connected therewith.

She was a charter member of the Women's Relief Corps of this city and stood faithful to all its interests. She was also a charter member of Winterset Chapter No. 180 of the Order of Eastern Star. Here, too, she was equally efficient in the discharge of her duties.

She was a woman of marked individuality and of executive ability. Her home was always attractive to her friends and the members other household. She entertained at her home the Ladies' Social Circle other church the day before she was taken sick, some fifty or sixty being present.

She left four sons, Shelton M., a decorator, now in the employ of a firm. in Springfield, Mo.; John Leonard, a street car conductor in Des Moines, Ia.; and C. F. and M. B. Mott, carrying on their father's ranch of 800 acres in Ransom county, N. D. All four sons are present on this occasion, also the wives of John Leonard and C. F. Mott.
