OBITUARY

Saturday morning the report was circulated through this vicinity that grand-pa Daniel Gray had closed his life’s work upon earth and passed to his eternal home. Old age had been gradually getting in its work for some months. His sons at this place, A. B. and Charley, being advised that time with their father was short, hastened to his bedside and witnessed the closing of his days.

The many friends of the deceased at Oakland, Iowa, where he had been making his home past few months, gathered at the house before the body left for Peru and held appropriate services; And on Sunday morning a large number of citizens and old time friends gathered at the home of A. B. Gray and followed the remains to the M.E. church, where the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Grinyer, to a large concourse of sympathizing friends, after which the remains were laid to rest beside his wife in the Peru cemetery. The history of grand-pa Gray’s life is here given as read from the pulpit:

Daniel S. Gray was born December 5th, 1821, in Dark (Darke) County, Ohio, and departed from this life April 10th, 1908, at Oakland, Iowa, at the age of 86 years 4 months and 5 days.

He was united in marriage to Anne E. Starbuck, March 16th, 1848, in the State of Indiana, moving to Peru, Madison county, Iowa, in the year 1855 where he resided until the death of his companion April 6th, 1901.

He was a charter member of the Peru M. E. church and remained so until his removal by letter two years ago. He was one of a family of 14 children of which only three survive him, two sisters and one brother who is present on this sad occasion. He was the father of nine children two of whom died in childhood. One at the age of 25 in 1883, the remaining children are: Sarah Alice, of Council Bluffs; Thomas E. of Oakland, Iowa; Austin B. of Peru; Charley E. of Truro; Hattie Snapp of Warner, Alberta; Lewis M. of Emmerson (Emerson), Iowa.
