Richard Wayne Truckenbrod, 65, of Winterset died Feb. 11, 2010.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset with Pastor Joel Nau officiating. Interment was at Winterset Cemetery with military and fireman honors. Memorials may be directed to the Winterset Firefighters Association or the family. Arrangements were handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
Richard Truckenbrod was born Jan. 18, 1945, in Ames to Roy August and Lucille Myrna (Roberts) Truckenbrod. The family moved to Winterset in late 1945. Richard, a 1963 graduate of Winterset High School, was enrolled in the welding program at Dunwoody Technical Institute in Minneapolis, Minn., from 1963-65. He also was a veteran of the United States Air Force, stationed at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, La., as part of the Air Commandos Special Forces Unit. Richard was awarded Base Airman of the Month four times, Wing Airman of the Month one time, and earned the Zero Defects Award for a tool he invented to aid in the repair and maintenance of jets.
His marriage to Diane Sue Powers took place on July 16, 1967. They returned to Winterset in January of 1969. Richard worked as a salesman for Air Products in Des Moines before joining his father as a welder at Truckenbrod Machine Shop later that year. He became owner of the welding shop in 1976, and continued there until selling the business in 1988. He currently worked for Des Moines Iron and Supply, which he joined in 1988.
Richard had been a member of the Winterset Fire Department since 1970, serving 19 of those years as chief. He also was a member of the Jaycees and Madison County Veterans’ Affairs Committee and a founding member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Diane, of Winterset; his children, Lori Olmstead of Eagle Grove and Jason Truckenbrod of Winterset; a brother, Phillip Truckenbrod of Hartford, Conn.; and four grandchildren.

Richard W. Truckenbrod, 65, of Winterset, Iowa, died February 11, 2010 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 16, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
Richard was born at Ames, Iowa to Roy & Lucille (Roberts) Truckenbrod and was married to Diane Sue Powers. He had been a lifetime resident of Winterset, having owned and operated Truckenbrod Machine Shop until 1988 when he became a salesman for Des Moines Iron and Supply. Richard served in the US Air Force, was a founding member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and was a 40 year member of the Winterset Fire Department, with 19 years as chief.
Richard is survived by his wife, Diane of Winterset; children, Lori (Mike) Olmstead of Eagle Grove and Jason (Tammy) Truckenbrod of Winterset; brother, Phillip Truckenbrod of Hartford, CT; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials given to the family will be directed to Winterset Firefighters Association or his family for a future designation.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley - Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
