Laura Lee Welch, 96, formerly of Belle Plaine, died Jan. 5, 2010, at the Hiawatha Care Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Christ United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine with the Rev. James Campbell officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine. Memorials may be directed to the Christ United Methodist Church Piano Restoration Fund. Funeral arrangements were handled by Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine.
Laura Welch was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Jackson Township, Madison County, to Clarence and Florence (Marston) Fife. She attended public school in Winterset, graduating from Winterset High School. Her marriage to Raymond Welch took place Sept. 4, 1931, in Creston. Laura worked for 33 years in the retail business, with many of those years spent in the Lanes Clothing Store in Belle Plaine. She also spent six years as a housemother at Iowa State and Drake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, and a brother.
She is survived by three daughters — Jo Anne Rogers of Belle Plaine, Beverly Lahn of Poinciana, Fla., and Connie Pyburn of Pensacola, Fla.; a twin sister, Lura Fife Beaman of Indianola; sister-in-law, Marie Welch Crabbs of Winterset; and 10 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
