Page 6Mrs. Sam C. Smith, a native of Madison county and a Winterset resident, died last Wednesday night, August 30th, at a hospital in Alton, Illinois after a ten day illness. For the past nine months, she had resided with a daughter, and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Van Syoc, at their home near Godfrey, Illinois.
Mrs. Smith was the former Florence Myrtle Dabney, a daughter of John Wesley and Ellen Dabney, and was born July 16, 1877 in Douglas township. She attended the Stringtown grade school and was graduated from the Winterset high school. She later attended Drake University, and on December 20, 1899, was married to Samuel Craig Smith, a Winterset attorney. They made their home at 521 West Washington, and here they raised their four children. Mr. Smith died December 26, 1929, and the following year Mrs. Smith and the two younger children moved to Des Moines.
Later she went to Iowa City, and then she moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to be near the Van Syoc. In recent years she resided in Bethesda, Maryland and last Christmas went to the Van Syoc home in Illinois.
She is survived by two children, Carleton D. Smith of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Bryce (Florence) Van Syoc of Godfrey, Illinois; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Charles (Blanche) Childers of Los Angeles, California.
Two sons preceded her in death, Courtney Smith, who died January 16, 1969 at Swathmore College in Pennsylvania and Murray D. Smith, who died at his home in Winterset August 28, 1972.
Memorial services for Mrs. Smith were conducted last Saturday afternoon at the First United Presbyterian church, by the Rev. John E. Fink, and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. Mrs. Smith had been a member of this church for many years.
