Death of Mrs. W. D. Garrett

The distressing news reached us yesterday announcing the death of Mrs. Rev. W. D. Garrett at Pitzer, which occurred on Tuesday from the effects of child birth. This is a sad blow to the people of that vicinity and to all who knew her. She was a lady of high personal attainments and much beloved by all who knew her. The funeral services were held today and the remains were taken to DeWitt, Ia., her old home, for burial.

Ruth Benedict Garrett

Ruth Benedict Garrett was born at DeWitt, Iowa, September 8, 1883. She was married to Rev. H. D. W. Garrett on February 12, 1903. On the evening of June 20th, she passed on to her eternal home, and was joined there the following morning by her infant son in the glad light of the everlasting day.

For almost two years Mrs. Garrett was with her husband in the congregation of Pitzer, bringing light and cheer and happy ministry into her home and into the homes and among the people of the community. Only for a brief time was she permitted to remain, but her vast influence is revealed in the great void her going has left at Pitzer.

To the hundreds who gathered to do honor to her memory and at the church on Thursday, scarcely a half of whom could gain entrance to the building, it seemed as if each one had lost a close personal friend. Sadness touched every heart, and sympathy profound and inexpressible went out to the bereft husband. The great consolation to him is, that the same tender, all-wise, all-gracious and sympathetic Savior in whose faith she passed away abides yet with him and is his hope and his comforter.

A large company of friends from Pitzer came as far as Winterset with Mr. Garrett and the relatives, doing all that sympathetic hearts could as they started on the sad journey carrying the precious dust to the final resting place at the old home at DeWitt.
