PHILLIP SELLERS, WINTERSET

Phillip Lee Sellers, 73, died Dec. 22, 2009, at Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa. Services were held Monday, Dec. 28, at the Winterset Community Church.

Phillip was born Feb. 17, 1936, in Centerville, Iowa, the only child of Charles C. and Lelah Faye (Rutledge) Sellers. He married Helen Elouise (Young) on April 19, 1959, at the Methodist Church in Mystic.

Phillip grew up in Mystic, Iowa, watching the Milwaukee trains pass through several times a day. He loved trains his entire life. He read a lot and loved history, having recall of many historical facts and dates.

He served in the United States Army, 1959–1961, spending one year in Korea.

Moving to Winterset, Iowa, in December of 1961, he operated Sellers Studio of Photography until his retirement in 2004. He was among the first photographers to become certified by the Professional Photographer of America. During his 43 years in business, he created photographic history for many families in and around Madison County.

Phil was a dedicated 30-year veteran of the Winterset Fire Department. He served on the ambulance prior to the establishment of the Madison County Ambulance Service and later as an EMT driver for Madison County Ambulance. He was past president of the Winterset Kiwanis Club.

Phillip loved his Saturday afternoon coffee group and was known for his dry wit and delight in fabricating stories to see who would believe him.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years; his son, John (Michelle); and two grandchildren, Ashley and Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Burial of the cremains will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter at a later date. Funeral arrangements were handled by McCalley-Collin Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Winterset Firefighters Association or to the family for future designation.
