J. N. Holmes was born in Madison county, Iowa, January 24, 1856, and died at his home in Winterset, Iowa, April 12, 1904, after a long illness. He moved from his farm in Scott township in March 1903, and went into the grocery business, and by fair dealing and courteous treatment built up a large trade. He had spent most of his life in Madison county. He was married August 28, 1879 to Captola B. Rollstin; to this union were born five children, four sons and one daughter, all of whom survive him and were at the bed side at his death.
The family will miss him greatly for he was a kind father and a loving husband. He was converted to Christ a few years ago and has lived a straight forward Christian life. The funeral was held from his late residence Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. E. E. Bennett and the body was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.
