D. Duane Hackett, 75, of Lorimor, died Dec. 10, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Dec. 16) at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, with interment in the Holy Name Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.ochiltree.com or greenwoodfuneral.com. Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset and Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Duane Hackett was born June 20, 1934, in Sioux City to Marion and Ida Mae (Schieuer) Hackett. His marriage to Joanne Mary Weber took place June 17, 1957. After graduating from Climbing Hill High School in 1952, Duane worked with his father on the family farm. In 1957, he moved to Oskaloosa where he worked as a field man for Farm Bureau and as a salesman for Garden Engineering. In 1959, he moved to Marcus where he was a sales manager for the Cherokee Silo Company. He again worked as a field man for Farm Bureau when he moved near Burt in 1960. In 1964, Duane moved to St. Mary’s, Kan., where he worked as a salesman for Directory Services of Algona and was promoted in 1968, which prompted a move to Algona. In 1971, he founded Hackett Associates which sold advertising and created telephone book covers. Duane operated his business until 1978. In January of 1979, he moved to a farm near Lorimor. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and National Republican Committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Karen Rae Bergert.

He is survived by two children, Renee Graaf of Humboldt and Kenneth Hackett of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Delora Jean Mitchell, Elaine Dyslin, Phyllis Ann Campbell, and Carol Gerjets; a brother, Darrell Hackett; and five grandchildren and one great-grandson
