Dolly Brommel , age 97 passed away Oct. 22, 2009 at the Indianola Good Samaritan Center.
Gladys Rebecca McCauley was born on March 6, 1912, to Thomas and Bessie Clark McCauley in Lorimor, Iowa. Gladys' brother Merl said her name did not fit, she is too small, "I'm calling her Dolly".
Dolly was a decedent of Caleb and Ruth Clark, the first settlers in Madison County.The Clark Tower in the Winterset Park was built in their memory. Dolly as a young girl helped carry stones and placed one in the stair wall.
She lived most of her childhood in the Winterset area and graduated from the Winterset High School in 1929.
Taking two years of extra classes in high school she received her teaching degree. Dolly started teaching in the fall of 1929, at the Olesby Country School and the Reddish Country School. After moving to the St. Marys area she taught in St. Marys and was the Girls Basketball Chaperone for many years.
On April 24, 1934, Dolly was joined in marriage to Lambert Brommel at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. To this union 4 children were born: Ronald, Donald, Thomas and Janice.
Dolly was a long time member of The St. Marys Community Club; and the Alter and Rosary Society.
Dolly loved her 29 grandchildren, 73 great -grandchildren and 22 great great grandchildren. Thru this past Christmas each child had a wrapped present under the tree. Approximately 150 family members attended along with Santa.
Preceding her in death were her parents-Bessie and Tom McCauley; husband Lambert Brommel;brothers Merle, Gerald and Donald McCauley; sister Hazel Leech; son Donald Brommel; grandchildren Todd Jordon-husband of Lori Jordon; great grandchildren Tyler and Gage Brommel.
She is survived by sons Ronald (Charlotte) Brommel, and Thomas (Marilyn) Brommel; daughter Janice (Robert) Gavin; and daughter-in-law Janice (Bud) Wattonville.
Dolly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She has touched so many hearts in her life and is deeply missed.
Visitation for Dolly will begin 3 p.m. Sunday at the St. Marys Parish Hall. A vigil service will start at 7 p.m., followed by the reciting of the Rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday October 26, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Burial is in the St. Marys Cemetery. Those wishing to send memorials are welcome to put them in Dollys' name.
