Dwight Baker departed from this world to be with his Lord and Savior on October 17, 2009. He passed peacefully in his sleep at home.
Dwight was born in 1918 in Winterset, IA to Rufus and Mabel Baker He married the love of his life Wilma Field in 1947 and moved to Des Moines. Dwight was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church. He served his country as a staff sergeant in WWII in the Philippines and Hawaii. Dwight was a member of the DAV. He was a decorated soldier receiving several medals including the bronze star and Purple Heart. Dwight retired after 33 years as an engineer from Rock Island Railroad and was a member of the UTU union local 258. His passion was hunting, fishing and trapping, he loved the outdoors, he owned land and was a hobby farmer.
Dwight was a devoted husband to his wife, Wilma. He was a loving, giving and generous father, grandfather, brother and uncle and a true friend to many more.
Dwight will forever be remembered with love and respect by those he leaves behind, including his children, Mike Baker and Gina (Mike) Miller; and his nine grandchildren, Emily, Christine, Reid, Brett, and Stacey Baker and Geoff and Tyler Miller, Amanda Downey, Bethany Cochran. He was preceded in death by his son, Dwight 'Ike' Baker; and his parents; and brothers and sisters.
A service will be held at Zion Lutheran church, 4300 Beaver Ave., at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2009. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at church. Burial will be with honors at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Iowa Hospice.
