LARRY NEVINS, Winterset

Lawrence D. Nevins, 74, of Winterset died Sept. 19, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held today (Wednesday, Sept. 23) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. Burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Stuart. Memorials may be directed to the Larry D. Nevins Memorial. Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.

Larry Nevins was born Dec. 6, 1934, in Dexter to John C. and Claire (Farrell) Nevins and was a 1954 graduate of Stuart High School. His marriage to Harriet Messinger took place Nov. 18, 1957, in Casey. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1957 to 1959, with a tour of duty in Germany. Larry began his career with Northwestern Bell in 1955 and continued to work with the telephone company through deregulation and the many changes over the years in the telephone industry. He retired in 1994 from US West. Larry was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Communication Workers of America Union and the Telephone Pioneers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia Provin; and three brothers, Joseph, James and Donald Nevins.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet, of Winterset; his children, Mike Nevins of Winterset and Patricia Bailey of Des Moines; three siblings — Mary Melroy and Bernard Nevins, both of Des Moines, and Martin “Bud” Nevins of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
