In the seventy-eighth year of his age and on the farm adjoining this city, on which he has improved and resided for almost fifty years, in the evening of April 16, Mr. David Downs quietly and peacefully breathed his life away. All of his ten children save one, Mrs. Jane Hollingsworth of Kearney, Nebraska, was during his last serious illness constantly at his side doing their utmost to alleviate his suffering.
The deceased was a man of intelligence and influence, and his was a life of usefulness. During the past winter his entire time and attention was taken up in caring for his wife, a victim of paralysis, and it is apparent that he overtaxed his waning vitality, and in consequence his family and friends have sustained an irreparable loss. He was not a Christian by any profession, but was one indeed by practice. He was a member in good standing in Model Lodge A.F. and A.M. of St. Charles and was consigned to the grave in our cemetery, under the ritual of that order. Sympathy for the bereaved is in no manner withheld.
