Georgia Tabitha Silverthorn, 85, of Afton died Sept. 11, 2009, at Winterset Care Center South.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Sept. 16) at Powers Funeral Home in Afton with Pastor William Richardson officiating. Burial was at Moon Cemetery in rural Macksburg. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice.
Georgia Silverthorn was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Joseph Crosby and Monta Mahala (Eggleston) McDonald and was a 1941 graduate of Winterset High School.
On Nov. 27, 1941, she was united in marriage to Daniel “Dean” Silverthorn in Grant City, Mo. Georgia continued her education at Simpson College, where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught country school for several years.
She accepted Christ as her personal savior in 1950 and was a member of the Fellowship Church in Monroe Township until the family moved to Missouri in 1966. Georgia taught Sunday school in the churches they attended and was group leader for youth groups. She also was an active farm wife and worked for Missouri Home Care until she retired.
In 2003, they moved back to Afton. She was a member of the Fellowship Church in Monroe Township.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Mary Harpole and Mable Richens.
She is survived by three sons — Dan Silverthorn of Peoria, Ill., Fred Silverthorn of Macksburg, and Sam Silverthorn of Nampa, Idaho; two sisters, Margaret Spick of Norwalk and Thelma Speer of West Plains, Mo.; one brother, Louis McDonald of Winterset; and eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
