Claude Wayne Roberts, 81, died Aug. 28, 2009, at Greenfield Manor.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 31, at Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield with Pastor Dean Porter officiating. Burial was at Greenfield Cemetery with military rites performed by Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post 265 and V.F.W. Post 5357.
Claude Roberts was born April 21, 1928, on the family farm in Adair County to John Ira and Mary Alice (Rudolf) Roberts. He attended rural country school through eighth grade and then attended Dexter High School where he graduated in 1946. Claude was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Germany during the Korean conflict. He was a farmer all of his life — working with his parents and brother, Ivan, on the farm his ancestors settled in 1849. After the death of his parents, Claude and Ivan continued farming together until Ivan’s death in 2008. Claude witnessed the honor of their family farm being placed on the registry of Iowa’s Century Farms, as well as the distinction of being a Heritage Farm — having been in the same family for more than 150 years. He was a member of Farm Bureau and American Legion in Greenfield.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ivan Roberts, and a sister, Violet Jensen.
He is survived by two sisters, Cora Plymesser-Slight of Adel and Alice Luhrs of Casey; and 12 nieces and nephews and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
