Page 8THE SECOND VICTIM
Mrs. L. T. Townsend, of Macksburg, Dies from Injuries Received at the Townsend Fire.
Mrs. L. T. Townsend, of Macksburg, died last Friday morning at 2 o’clock as a result of the injuries received at the explosion which followed the fire at her husband’s store.
In the early morning of June 1st the store of Townsend & Co. was discovered to be on fire and a crowd gathered about. When the fire was well under way an explosion occurred, supposed to be caused by gunpowder or some other explosive in the store, and the entire front of the building was blown out. Mrs. Townsend, who, with others, was standing on the porch, was caught under the wooden awning as it fell, and was crushed and bruised in the region of the breast, from which injury she has now died after five weeks’ suffering.
Mrs. Townsend was a noble and lovable woman, greatly esteemed for her kindly and charitable disposition, and her death is sincerely mourned in the community.
This is the second victim of the explosion, the first being Mr. Thomas Whitworth, who received injuries from which he died in a few hours.
