THELMA I. REID, Des Moines

Thelma I. Reid, 90, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Kavanagh on 56th from pulmonary fibrosis. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 19, 2009) at the First United Methodist Church, 309 E. Jefferson St., in Winterset with burial at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes. Visitation was held Tuesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Thelma was born Oct. 19, 1918, to Paul and Gussie Poling in Artesian, S.D. She owned and operated Reid’s Greenhouse near Grimes for over 25 years and then was a surgical technician for Mercy Hospital for 15 years. Thelma was a member of the Winterset Women and attended the First United Methodist Church in Winterset where she participated in many church activities. She was a past member of St. James Lutheran Church in Johnston.

Thelma loved her family and was a devoted grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed sewing handmade quilts and selling them at her shop in Shell Knob, Mo., which she shared with her daughter, Gloria.

Thelma is survived by her children — Sharon (Elmo) Weideman, Doug (Carol) Darnall, and Gloria Zucaro; grandchildren — Kimberly Cyr, Linda (Aaron) Ramirez, Michael Darnall, Angela (Jose) Moreno, Kelli (Jeff) Kramer, James Darnall, Tracy Rottinghaus, D. Troy Rottinghaus, and Sarah Gillaspy; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Landis Poling; and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Nelson E. Darnall; second husband, Walter A. Reid; sisters, Bernice Higbee and Pauline Cole; and brothers, Marvin and Paul Poling.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Lung Association.
