George Cassidy was born April 1, 1852, in Zanesville, Ohio, and came to Iowa with his family in 1864. He was converted and joined the Presbyterian church under Rev. A. M. Heizer, who was pastor here from 1864 to 1867. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. He was a member of this church to the end.

He was married in 1878 at St. Louis, Mo., to Miss Alice Parker. After ten years’ residence in Winterset, they resided in Des Moines, where Mr. Cassidy was a traveling man for a hardware firm for 18 years, and also was a mail clerk in the government railway service. For eight years they lived in Oregon on his fruit farm and three years ago they returned to Winterset, where they have since made their home and where Mr. Cassidy passed away after a long, continued illness at the Winterset hospital on June 17th.

He was one of the charter members and a state officer in the Christian traveling men’s association, The Gideons. He was active in the temperance cause and especially interested in the young people of the church and Sabbath school.

He was one of six children, of whom only two are now living, Mrs. Margaret Jones of Winterset and L. L. Cassidy of Des Moines. He also leaves his wife, Mrs. Alice Cassidy and two children: Mrs. Eva Hamilton of Ontario, Canada, and Robert Cassidy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon with an address by Rev. L. C. Cooley, D. D., and interment was in Rock City cemetery.
