James W. Groves, son of Joseph and Alice Groves, was born in Madison county, Iowa, July 2, 1887, and departed this life June 19th, 1919, aged 31 years, 11 months and 3 days. He was united in marriage to Sarah Flanagan of Colby, Kansas, November 6, 1915.
He made a profession in one of “Billy” Sunday’s evangelistic meetings but never united with any church.
He was a member of the 16th Coast Artillery, stationed at Fort Mills, P. I. The body was shipped from the Fort Hospital at Corregidor where he died of pneumonia, to Manilla and transferred to the United States reaching Winterset August 23d.
The funeral was held in the cemetery Sunday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Mr. Willey.
He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, father, mother, four sisters and two brothers, two brothers and one sister having preceded him in death.
A letter written to his mother by his lieutenant commends him very highly as a man and soldier. The news of his death came as great shock to the family, who have the sympathy of the entire community.
