JOHN C. MARDIS

John C. Mardis, who grew to manhood in Winterset, died in Des Moines, Sunday, Oct. 1st, at the age of 6l years. Mr. Mardis, was the son of Mr and Mrs. Thomas Mardis, born Sept. 9, 1861, at Green Bay, Iowa, from which place he moved with his parents to Winterset, when 13 years old.

He worked with his father as a stone and brick mason until 22 years old, when he went to Des Moines to make that place his home. Mr. Mardis was very successful in his work and became one of the most prominent contractors in the middle west.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice, two children, Homer and Mary; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Merrill of Des Moines and Mrs. Hattie Grout of Pasadena, Calif.; and one brother, Fred of Winterset.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Geo. D. Rogers were held Monday afternoon at the Fred Mardis home. Burial services were by the Elks at the Winterset cemetery.

OBITUARIES – John C. Mardis

John C. Mardis, whose death occurred in Des Moines Saturday, was one of the best known contractors of Iowa.

He was but a small boy when the family removed form Osceola to Winterset where he was educated and began learning the mason’s trade under the direction of his father. He then removed to Des Moines and engaged in contracting business.. he has erected fully two-thirds of the largest business blocks of Des Moines. Throughout the middle west his name is well known as a contractor and builder, placing him as one of the foremost contractors of Iowa, with few equals and no superiors.

Mr. Mardis was a Knight Templar and Consistory Mason also held membership with the Elks, the Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Pythias.

Mr. Mardis suffered a paralytic stroke in June from which he never fully recovered. He spent much of his time since then in Winterset at the home of his brother, Fred where the funeral services were conducted in charge of the Elks lodge.

John C. Mardis, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Mardis, was born September 8, 1861 in Greenbay, Iowa, and died at the home of his sister, Mrs. C. O. Merrill, September 1922.

In January 1893, he was married to Miss Beatrice Ratliff, who, with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Miller and grandson, John Mardis Miller, two sisters, Mrs. C. O. Merrill, of Des Moines, and brother Fred Mardis, of Winterset, survive him.
