DORIS C. VULCANO, Des Moines

Doris Vulcano (Mama Cano), 87, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2009 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 6, at Brooks Tonini Chapel from 3 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, August 7, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Doris was born February 24, 1922 in Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Marie Davis. She graduated from Winterset High School as their star basketball player in 1939. She continued her education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1941. She worked 65 years as a Registered Nurse, retiring in 2005 at the age of 83 years young. Doris married Fortune Vulcano on Christmas Day in 1943. They spent 60 wonderful years together. Throughout her life she was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Mary Catherine Wilson, Jo Anne Rhoades (Kirk), and Sue Anderson (Gordy); five grandchildren, Bret Wilson (Stephanie), Brian Wilson (Elizabeth), Stacy Anderson, Jon Anderson (Michelle), and Heather Reyes (Luis); eleven great- grandchildren, and loving friend and neighbor Clara Zenti.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the devoted staff at Mercy Hospice who provided Doris with exceptional and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Foundation or Mercy Hospice of Johnston.
