Almost a Centenarian.

Jemima Elledge was born in Kentucky September 29, 1802, and died in Scott township, Madison county, Iowa, July 22, 1900, having nearly completed her 98th year. She was married to Richard Beall, in Morgan county, Ill., in March 1824. They moved to Madison county, Iowa, in April, 1955, where they have ever since resided.

She was the mother of eleven children, and the following survive her: Mrs. Charity Matthews, Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Susan Hill, Winterset, Iowa; Edward Beall, of Scott township, and Leonard Beall, of Kansas. Her husband died sixteen years ago last January.

When but a young girl she united with the Baptist church, and when she came to Iowa found a home in the church of her choice as soon as there was an opportunity. The records show that her name appears among the charter members of the church of this city. It reads as follows: The First Baptist church of Winterset, Iowa, was organized in the year 1856, with the following as charter members. R. E. Beall, Richard Beall, Jemima Beall, R. Bickel, Jane Bickel, William Charlock, E. Elledge, J. Elledge, J. S. Elledge, C. Alcorn, S. McElrane, Sarah McElrane, Ruth McElrane, M. Moody and M. D. Leonard. To this spiritual and active little band she became devotedly attached, and for the prosperity of her beloved zion she ever labored and fervently prayed.

The late Mrs. Judge Leonard, who was an associate member with her was accustomed to say: “Mrs. Beall ought not to give her testimony of religious experience, for her evidence is so clear that it almost discourages the rest of us.”

For several years she had been growing deaf, and her extreme age had weakened her mental powers, rendering her incapable of knowing but little of the passing events in the busy world around her, but like “a shock of corn fully ripe” she has been gathered by the reaper of the harvest and taken to the land where the form never changes nor the powers ever fail.

Her funeral services were held at the Zion church, Scott township, Tuesday, July 24, 1900, at 10 o’clock, a.m. and accompanied by a large procession of neighbors and friends her remains were placed by the side of her husband’, in the Winterset cemetery. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. L. E. Follansbee of Winterset.
