Thursday, April 12, 1900Merle, the four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Thornton, died very suddenly on Tuesday morning. The child when it was put to bed on Monday evening was apparently as well as ever and slept well until towards morning when the mother was awakened by its restlessness, and on taking him up she found he was choking. Dr. Maulsby was summoned but before he arrived the child went into spasms. Upon his arrival the doctor administered one dose of medicine and prepared another to give it but before he could do so little Merle was beyond human aid, his spirit, having gone to Him who gave it. Merle had never been a strong child but lately had been improving greatly, and his sudden death came to the sorrowing parents like a thunderbolt from the cloudless heavens.
The funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. Mitchell, and the little body laid away in Fairview cemetery.
