JOHN NEWTON PATTERSON

A worthy, unassuming man, known throughout the country for more than a quarter of a century and a familiar character on the streets of Winterset will be greatly missed hereafter. We refer to J. N. Patterson who died very suddenly last Saturday night, Dec. 16th. He was in the city as usual Saturday and his peaceful and unexpected death that same evening, was a surprise to everybody.

Mr. Patterson was born in Morgan County, Illinois, in 1838, his parents having moved to that place from Tennessee in 1821. When yet a young man, Mr. Patterson went to Plattville Academy in Wisconsin and while there, enlisted in the 41st Wisconsin regiment and after word in the 47th. Returning from the war, he taught school in Wisconsin where he married one of his pupils, Miss Esther Turcott. He, after his father and brother moved to this country, came here also and taught school here. The father becoming aged and infirm, Mr. And Mrs. Patterson moved into the home three miles north of Winterset and took care of the father until his death, which occurred several years ago. He became owner of the home and continued to occupy the place until his death.

Mr. Patterson was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church from boyhood. He came of one of the leading Presbyterian families of Illinois; his uncle, Dr. R. W. Patterson, was for many years pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Chicago, president of McCormick Theological seminary and one of the founders of Lake Forest University. For many years, Mr. Patterson has been teacher of the bible class in the Sunday school near his home and at the time of his death was president of the township Sunday school association of Union township. He also took quite at interest in political matters and for years has been justice of the peace, an office he filled at the time of his death. He was a classical scholar and unusually well informed on all matters of public interest.

Mrs. Patterson's sister, Mrs. Wilcott, from Lemar, Iowa, arrived while the funeral was in progress. No other relatives were present, as the brother, Robert Patterson, who lives in Kansas, was away from home at the time. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. S. Corkey, who preached a very felling discourse from II Timothy, fourth chapter and sixth verse.
