Evelyn LaVere Cumings, 96, of Truro died May 24, 2009, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 29, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. Burial was at Peru Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Peru United Methodist Church or her family.
LaVere Cumings was born April 25, 1913, to Clyde William and Floy May (Fenimore) Youmans of rural Peru. Her marriage to Lloyd Myron Cumings took place in 1933. LaVere resided in Madison County her entire life, graduating from Peru High School in 1930.
She was an employee of Bing Ross at United Foods, matron for Kale’s, vocalist, and farmer. LaVere also was a member of the Peru Methodist Church for 78 years where she also was superintendent for 17 years, youth leader, teacher, choir director, president and treasurer of the W.S.C.S., and chairman of the Hannah Circle for 12 years. She was active in the Madison County Democrats, Scott Township Happy Hour Club, Madison County Women’s Quartet, Farm Bureau, and Scott Township and Ohio Township 4-H clubs.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Phil Youmans; and a sister, LeNore May.
She is survived by two sons, Karl Cumings of Bella Vista, Ark., and Robert Cumings of West Branch; two daughters, Margaret Johnson of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Pam Madison of Truro; and 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
