The second sudden death in town within a week’s time occurred on Saturday evening last. Mrs. Davis, wife of J. R. Davis, a lady of about 65 years, of fine physique and apparently in perfect health, died almost instantly of apoplexy. She had been from home the afternoon before, had returned, prepared supper, eaten heartily and done the evening work. After the first shower, remembering that she had not fastened her chickens in their house, she went out to attend to the matter. Not coming in directly, one of the family went out to see where she was and found her fallen down by the door of the chicken house. She was carried in and Dr. Milholland, who lives close by, was summoned, but life was extinct, death having apparently come to her instantaneously. The funeral Tuesday afternoon at the U. P. church, conducted by Rev. White, was largely attended.

Saturday evening when the storm came up Mrs. J. R. Davis, who resides in the southwest part of town, got up from her bed and went out to look after the housing of some young chickens which she feared were in danger from the storm. Some minutes later it began to rain and Mr. Davis stepped to the door and called his wife but received no answer. A search was made and she was discovered huddled up against the barn. She was carried to the house but was already dead, the cause being apoplexy. The funeral services were held at the U. P. church Tuesday at 2 o’clock under direction of Rev. J. H. White.

Mrs. Davis was an old resident. Her husband was a former sheriff of Madison county and the family have many friends to mourn with them in their loss.

Margaret Henderson Davis was born May 5th, 1833; died June 17th, 1899. Her early life was spent in Guernsey county, Ohio, up to the time of womanhood. At the age of fourteen she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and connected with the Associate Reformed church.

On the 10th of February, 1853, she was married to James R. Davis by the Rev. Thomas Brown, of Cambridge, Ohio. In 1854 she connected, with her husband, in the Associate church, which in 1858 was merged into the present United Presbyterian church.

In the spring of 1857 Mrs. Davis came with her husband to Iowa, arriving in Winterset on the 2nd of May. At this place the remainder of her early life was spent. She was the mother of nine children, five sons and four daughters. Three sons and three daughters, with her husband, still remain, and all of them reside in this county.

Mrs. Davis was an exemplary Christian woman. Her own life praises her. In her own home she was the faithful, loving wife and the tender, sympathetic mother. In the church she was the regular attendant, the devout worshiper and the ready worker. In the community, among her neighbors and acquaintances, she was the kind, cheerful and helpful friend.

Mrs. Davis was an example to be patterned after in very many ways. No one ever heard Mrs. Davis speak a complaining, impatient or unkind word. She always looked on the bright side of things, and was ever ready with a cheerful and encouraging word. She was never forward but her presence was always felt. She has gone to be with her Lord, and her works will ever speak well her name. Her bereaved family may be comforted by the thought of what she has been, and that she died in the hope of the glorious resurrection.
