DON GARRETT, Macksburg, Iowa

Donald Carlton Garrett, 81, of Macksburg died May 7, 2009, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 12, at the Macksburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Sandra Smith officiating. Burial was at Moon Cemetery in rural Macksburg. Memorials may be directed to the family. Funeral arrangements were handled by Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Online condolences may be made at www.powersfh.com .

Don Garrett was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Douglas Township, Union County, to Russell and Lillian (Grandfield) Garrett. On March 16, 1947, he married Norma Butcher in Hiawatha, Kan. Early in their marriage, they operated a gas station in Macksburg. They also farmed for many years before moving to Colorado Springs, Colo., where Don worked as a camper salesman at a local dealership. The couple then moved to La Plata, Mo., where Don worked as a maintenance man at the Kirksville hospital. Most of Don’s final years were spent rebuilding cars at their dealership, D & N Cars.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Raymond.

He is survived by three children, Bill Garrett of Bevington, Betty Van Gelder of Oskaloosa, and Annette Doolittle of Webster City; two brothers, Marvin Garrett of Creston and Robert Garrett of Seven Springs, N.C.; and two grandsons.
