Vernon was born July 22nd, 1910 at Yutan, Nebraska to Claudius Peter and Margaret Ellen Eggers. He lived at Yutan until 1930 and then moved with his parents and sister Bonnie to a farm near Murray, Iowa in 1930.

There he met Elsie Putney and they were united in marriage on February 14, 1932 at Indianola, Iowa and to that union four sons were born; Ivan, Curtis, Gary, and Gerald.

The Eggers family moved to a farm near Truro, Iowa in 1940. Vernon farmed for 26 years in Clarke County, Iowa. He then moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1956 and worked as a carpenter for 18 years for his son Ivan. Additionally, he worked for another 2 years with Gibson Construction before retiring in 1975.

He was preceded in death by parents, wife Elsie, sister Bonnie, son Curtis, grandson Jon Eggers, and daughter-in-law Carolyn. He survived by son Ivan and wife Deloris, sons Gary and Gerald, 10 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and 6 great- great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday, May 15th, at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.
