An Old Citizen of Earlham Dies.

The people of this community were shocked on Tuesday morning by the sudden death of Uncle Edward Hadley. He had been confined to his bed for several weeks with injuries received from a fall some time ago, but he appeared to be rapidly recovering until Tuesday morning, when the family were awakened by his moans and hastened to his bedside only to find that the grim messenger of death had issued his edict and the soul of Edward Hadley was taking leave of its earthly tabernacle. It would be idle talk for us to attempt to eulogize Uncle Edward. For nearly forty years he lived in this immediate vicinity and you all knew him. What he was, he lived, and his good life and good works will live long in the land which shall know him no more.

The people of this community were shocked on Tuesday morning in the sudden death of Uncle Edward Hadley. He had been confined to his bed for several weeks with injuries received from a fall some time ago, but he appeared to be rapidly recovering until Tuesday morning when the family were awakened by his moans and hastened to his bedside only to find that the grim messenger of death had issued his edict and the soul of Edward Hadley was taking leave of its earthly tabernacle. It would be idle talk for us to attempt to eulogize Uncle Edward. For nearly forty years he lived in this immediate vicinity and you all know him. What he was, he lived, and his good life and good works will live long in the land which shall know him no more.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the Friends church, the services being conducted by Rev. McGrew. The pastor spoke feelingly of the departed, and there were many wet eyes in the large congregation that listened to his remarks. The interment was in the Earlham cemetery.

Edward Hadley was born September 13, 1823, in North Carolina and died March 20th, 1900, at the home of his daughter in Earlham, Iowa.

At an early age he moved with his parents to Morgan county, Indiana, and from there he came to Dallas county in 1861.

In the year 1844 he was married to Elizabeth Curl with whom he lived until her death, December 18th, 1896. To them were born six children, four of whom are now living.

Edward Hadley was a birthright member of the Friends and during his entire life has retained his membership. He was converted at about 45 years of age and a few years after was recorded a minister of the Gospel. For the gift of the ministry he endeavored to be true to the leading of the Holy Spirit and traveled extensively preaching the Word. His meeting has ever been willing to grant him minutes for gospel service and not only in our own state but also in Indiana, Missouri, S. Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas has he carried the sweet message of truth.

Suddenly, in the early morning, the messenger came for the old soldier of the Cross—but found him watching and ready, and after 76 years, 6 months and 7 days of earthly pilgrimage, he rests.
