JAMES DOOLEY, WINTERSET

V. James “Jim” Dooley, 80, of Winterset and formerly of Martensdale, died April 21, 2009, at Winterset Care Center North.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 25, at St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Church near Cumming. Burial was at St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice, Martensdale Fire and Rescue or his church. Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset.

Jim Dooley was born June 7, 1928, in Des Moines to Thomas and Laura (Kelly) Dooley and was a 1945 graduate of Martensdale High School. His marriage to Ellen Wiedmann took place Feb. 7, 1949, at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. Jim owned and operated Dooley’s Tavern in West Des Moines for many years. He also worked at Ankeny-Des Moines Plumbing in Des Moines as a shop manager for several years. For 30 years, he and his wife operated the Bread Shed at the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival. He was a member of the Assumption Parish in Churchville, Izaak Walton League, and an honorary member of American Legion Post 562 of Cumming and Post 716 of St. Marys.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a grandson,Thomas Gehringer; and seven siblings.

He is survived by 10 daughters — Terri Henson of Martensdale, Rosemary Allsup and Jodi Murphy, both of Winterset, Ginger Tribby and Margie Gehringer, both of St. Marys, Dee Armstrong of Adel, Joanne Hartman of Mediapolis, Nancy Ross of Van Meter, Carol Weltner of Sumner and Denise Dooley of Urbandale; three sons, Mick Dooley of Lexington, Ky., Kevin Dooley of Denver, Colo., and Tim Dooley of Omaha, Neb.; and 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

V. James "Jim" Dooley, 80, formerly of Martensdale, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the Winterset Care Center North.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Church near Cumming. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 24, 2009 at the St. Marys Parish Hall in St. Marys, with a Scripture Service beginning at 7 p.m.

Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Cemetery with a luncheon to be held at the St. Marys Parish Hall following the committal. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice, Martensdale Fire and Rescue or his church.

Jim is survived by his ten daughters, Terri (Larry) Henson of Martensdale, Rosemary (Ron) Allsup of Winterset, Dee Armstrong of Adel, Jodi (Ted) Murphy of Winterset, Ginger (Neal) Tribby of St. Marys, Margie (Chuck) Gehringer of St. Marys, Joanne (Bryan) Hartman of Mediapolis, Nancy (Dean) Ross of Van Meter, Carol (Dan) Weltner of Sumner, and Denise Dooley of Urbandale; three sons, Mick Dooley of Lexington, KY, Kevin Dooley of Denver, CO, and Tim Dooley of Omaha, NE; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
