Gladys Ida Martens, 100, died April 9, 2009, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church near Van Meter. Burial was at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church or Middle River Hospice of Winterset. Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
Gladys Martens was born July 15, 1908, to Charley and Mary Petri of Adair and was baptized Sept. 6, 1908, at St. John’s Lutheran Church north of Adair. The family moved to Dexter when she was age 3. On June 29, 1923, she was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church.
Gladys graduated from Dexter High School and then attended Drake University. She taught school for 11 years. In 1939, she was united in marriage to Grant J. Martens. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm in Madison County. They were members of the Trinity Lutheran Church of rural Van Meter where Gladys taught Sunday school for many years. She also taught Bible school. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (of which she was a district board member).
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Clara Weisbrod and Cora Martens.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
