RICHARD JAMES, Winterset

Richard “Dick” James, 72, of Winterset died March 20, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, March 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn officiating. Burial was at Gregg Cemetery in Clarke County. Memorials given to the family will be directed to Middle River Hospice. Funeral arrangements were handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.

Dick James was born June 27, 1936, to Philip and Hattie (Sumner) James of Hopeville. After high school, Dick joined the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean conflict. His marriage to Judy Ann Wagner took place Oct. 15, 1960, in Madison, Minn. A resident of Winterset since 1967, Dick worked as a service technician for Qwest Telephone Company for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and American Legion, both of Winterset, and a local poker club. He also was a former member of the Jaycees.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Reed and Teressa Boles; and three brothers, Bernard James, John James and Philip James.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, of Winterset; four daughters, Kim Townsend and Elizabeth White, both of Winterset, Lisa Seward of Waukee, and Jody Bedell of Farmington, Minn.; three sisters, Betty Sevier of Creston, Marie Jones of Grand River and Maggie Darr of Carlisle; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
