CHARLES E. "CHARLIE" REED, Waukee

Charles Earl "Charlie" Reed, 93, of Waukee passed from this life on February 24, 2009. In accordance with Charlie's wishes, following cremation , interment will be in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter.

Charlie was born on a farm outside of Truro, IA on August 7, 1915, to Charles N. & Maude H. Reed. He was always an athlete and signed with the St. Louis Browns to play baseball out of high school. From there he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels. On July 3, 1937, he married Delores Mae (Dee) Halterman in Bethany, MO.

Charlie served as a corporal with the second Marine Division during WWII. Charlie and Dee had one daughter, Beverlee Jo, two grandsons, Paul and Jon, and five great grandchildren. Charlie was an engraver by profession and worked for Capital City Printing and retired from the Meredith Corp in 1979. He loved the game of golf and played whenever he could.

Charlie is survived by his lifetime partner of 71 years, Dee Reed of Waukee; his daughter Jo (Ron) James of West Des Moines; grandsons: Paul N. Feilen of Chattanooga, TN and Jon C. (Aleshia) Feilen of Williamsburg, VA; five great grandchildren; his brother, Robert E. (Lois) Reed of Brentwood, CA; and a niece and two nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, John E. Reed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery or the Animal Rescue League.
