Thursday, June 18, 1903Death of C. H. Humbert -
The following we take from the Corning Free Press - Mr. Humbert was, for a long time a resident of this county, living on a farm, in Crawford township. He was universally esteemed, was an honorable and conscious man and the best of neighbors:
Charles H. Humbert died at this residence on Grove avenue, Friday, of consumption after a lingering illness of five years. He was born in St. Pracha, Vosjas, France, Nov. 5th, 1843, where his mother died a few years later. The father had heard of the French colony at Nauvoo, Ill., and thought it would be a good place to rear his family of small children. In 1850 he came to America and located in the French colony but only remained there a short time.
On January 1st, 1870, deceased married Miss Catherine Collins of Des Moines, who survives him. To this union was born 11 children, 6 of whom preceded the father to the better world.
Mr. and Mrs. Humbert resided in Des Moines and Madison county until a few years ago when they went west for his health, finally going to Tucson, N.M. The change brought no relief and about a year ago they came to Corning where he has gradually grown worse until relieved by death which came peacefully at 1:30 a.m.
There was a short funeral sermon at the house at 11:30 Saturday, conducted by Rev. W. E. Adams and the remains shipped to St. Charles, Iowa, where they were met by the Masonic lodge, of which the deceased was a member and interment made Sunday in Mount Pelier cemetery near Patterson.
