Funeral services for Lawrence E. Hutzell, 81, of Algona, were conducted at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Algona. Rev. Cliff Isaacson was the officiant and Wes Bartlett was the lay speaker. Casket bearers were Bob Hutzell, Floyd Hutzell, Brian Hutzell, Jeff Sheetz, Tim Johnson and James Andreasen. Interment was at East Lawn Cemetery, and the Wilson Funeral Home of Algona was in charge of the arrangements.

Lawrence E. Hutzell, the son of Edward S. and Daisy Fenn Hutzell, was born February 25, 1905, in Calhoun County, near Farnhamville, Iowa. The family moved to Madison County, near Earlham, and he attended rural schools and then Earlham High School. He received normal school training and taught school in South Dakota for a time. After attending William Penn College in Oskaloosa, he married Eleanor Standing on June 12, 1929, in Earlham. He taught school for 18 years. During the last few years of that career, he was superintendent of schools. In 1946, the couple moved to Algona and established Hutzell Office and School Supplies, which they have operated for nearly 40 years.

Mr. Hutzell was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Algona, having served in many offices and as Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of the Methodist Men’s Club of the church and worked on the Edward Kaib Nativity Scene project. He was a Legion of Honor member of the Algona Noon Kiwanis Club, a member of the Fellowship for Peace and Justice and the Algona Chamber of Commerce and a former Boy Scout Troop committeeman.

Mr. Hutzell is survived by his wife Eleanor; one son, Larry of Des Moines; one daughter, Joy, Mrs. Leroy Johnson, of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren and six sisters, Mrs. Lela McCarty, of Perry, Mrs. Ethel Melton, of Linden, Ora, Mrs. Sheldon Strong, of Earlham, Mabel, Mrs. Willard Barnett, of Earlham, Mrs. Violet White, of Des Moines and Arol, Mrs. Roscoe Fiscel, of Adel. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Ralph, Lloyd, Roy and Maurice.
