Earlham, IowaWard E. Lewis, 84, a former Earlham resident died recently in Castro Valley, California. Ward will be remembered here by the older folks in Earlham. He lived with his mother, sister and brother on the Lewis farm north of town. His father died before they moved to the farm.
The Lewis kids walked to the little country school house known as Adams Township School. It was located on one acre of the Lewis farm. When he finished the eighth grade he drove a horse to town to attend high school (Earlham), where he graduated in 1919. After graduation he worked as time keeper at the old cement quarry.
Ward met and married Olive Scott of Dexter. They lived in Earlham a few years then moved to Des Moines where they owned and operated a small grocery store. After a time they sold the store and moved to California.
During World War II he worked in a shipyard and after the war he went into construction work. He and his wife, Olive lived for many years in Castro Valley and were loyal members of the Methodist church there. They lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his older brother Robert.
His only close, living relative is his sister, Maurine Lewis McCoy of Des Moines.
Ward’s funeral services and burial were from the Castro Valley, California United Methodist Church.
