Thursday, January 31, 1985Services were held Friday, January 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in State Center for James F. Hemphill, 62, of State Center, former superintendent at West Marshall and Earlham. He died Tuesday at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where he had been a patient for the past three weeks. The Reverend Richard Fitch officiated with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.
Born July 13, 1922, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Albert and Hazel Orchard Hemphill. He received his education in the Marshalltown schools, Marshalltown Junior College, received his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and his master’s degree from Drake University in Des Moines. During World War II, he served three and a half years in the U.S. Navy.
On May 28, 1944, he was married to Margaret Hall and they made their home in Earlham for 13 years, where Mr. Hemphill was superintendent of schools. They then moved to State Center, where he was superintendent of schools for 19 years. In 1980 he resigned that position and joined the Iowa Department of Public Instruction as a consultant in the child nutrition division, retiring from that position last October.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Terrestrial Masonic Lodge of State Center.
Surviving are his widow Margaret, two sons and daughter, Jeffrey Hemphill of Marshalltown, James A. Hemphill of Ames and Judith (Mrs. Brian) Maier of Mahopac, New York. Also surviving are four grandchildren, a brother, Albert Hemphill of Marshalltown and several nieces and nephews.
The Wensel-Perrin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Those from Earlham who attended the funeral services were Amor and Velma Routh, Bob and Esther Branam, John and Geneva Birk and Ron Routh of Norwalk.
