Annis Jane Jones, 104, of Winterset and formerly of the Murray area, died Dec. 15, 2008, at Winterset Care Center South.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec.18, at the Church of Christ in Murray with Pastor Brian McCracken officiating. Open visitation will be from 2–8 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 17) at Powers Funeral Home in Afton with the family receiving friends from 6–8 p.m. Burial will be at Murray Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church of Christ in Murray. Online condolences may be sent to www.powersfh.com.
Annis Jones was born Sept. 4, 1904, in Troy Township, Clarke County, to James Hamilton and Edna Grace (Camp) Carter. She attended Brush College in rural Murray and later attended summer school to receive her teaching certificate. From 1922 to 1931, she was a country school teacher in Clarke and Madison counties. When Annis was 83 years old, she received her GED at Southwestern Community College in Creston. On Nov. 14, 1932, she was united in marriage to Hazel Wayne Jones in Bethany, Mo. Annis, a housewife, was a librarian in Murray from 1949 to 1975. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge 138 from 1938 to 1986, of which she held all offices and was a retired past noble grand and assistant. She also was a member of the Murray Church of Christ, Ladies Council Circle, Madison Chapel from 1917 to 1938, and American Legion Junior Auxiliary (21 years). She was active with Cub Scouts as a den mother, Brownies, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and teaching Sunday school, as well as being president of the library board from 1975–86.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Shirley Ballinger; and four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by one son, Frank Carter of Winterset, and 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
