MARTHA SMITH, STUART

Martha Henrietta Smith, 90, died Dec. 13, 2008, at the Community Care Center in Stuart.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Dec. 17) at St. John’s Catholic Church in rural Adel with Father Al Sherbo officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.

Martha Smith was born Dec. 17, 1917, to Lewis and Cora (Fett) Hill of rural Madison County and was a 1935 graduate of Dexter High School. Her marriage to Joe Smith took place Aug. 6, 1937, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winterset. Martha and Joe farmed in the Dexter area for 10 years until 1947, when they purchased a farm south of Earlham which they operated until 1984, when they retired and moved to Earlham. Martha was a farm wife and homemaker for most of her life. She also was employed part time answering phones and as a greeter at Kuhn Funeral Homes.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Willis Smith; one daughter, Mary Jane Allsup; and a sister, Marjorie McMullen.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Donna Smith of Winterset; and seven grandchildren — Larry Joe Allsup of Redfield, Cindy Villotti of Earlham, Shelley Weeks and Mark Smith, both of Winterset, and David Allsup, Genise Allsup and Rodney Allsup, all of Stuart; and 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Martha H. Smith, age 90, died at Community Care Center in Stuart December 13, 2008.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Wednesday December 17, 2008 at St. John's Catholic Church in Adel with burial in the Earlham Cemetery.

Martha is survived by her grandchildren: Larry Joe Allsup (Laurie) of Redfield; Cindy Villotti of Earlham; Genise Allsup (Craig Bywaters) of Stuart; Shelly Weeks (Bob) of Winterset; David Allsup (Teresa) of Stuart; Mark Smith (Julie) Winterset; Rodney Allsup (Amy) of Stuart; 14 great- grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday December 16, 2008 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to her church.
