Marie Agnes (Breen) Mailander, age 95, of Anita, died Monday, December 1, 2008, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia, Iowa.

Marie Agnes (Breen) Mailander was born near Bridgewater, Iowa on April 14, 1913 to Dan and Alice (Waldron) Breen. Marie joined her parents in what would later be twelve brothers and sisters including Marie, who was the fourth child. Marie graduated from Adair High School at the age of 16 and began her teaching career near Winterset, Iowa. She later received her BS in Education from Drake University in 1963. Marie taught for over 50 years in a one room school house in Cass County and the Anita Schools.

Marie married Paul J. Mailander of Wiota, Iowa in 1942 and they were blessed with a son, Michael Francis who died at birth.

Marie was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church of Anita, and also the American Legion Auxiliary, where she helped with bingo on Saturday nights. Marie also helped the Red Cross and many other groups. Helping others was a life time goal of Marie's.

Cookies were always in her refrigerator or oven and soon would be on their way to put a smile on someone's face. Many people called her Aunt Cookie.

She loved the town Anita and everything about it. She said "There is no other town quite like Anita! God bless our little town of Anita!" Her life was a gift of love and caring. She will be missed.

Marie is survived by her sister, Marcella Cunningham of Albia, IA; sister-in-law, Pearl Mailander of Atlantic, IA; a brother-in-law and sister- in-law, Tom and Dorothy Mailander of Webster City, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Paul; son, Michael Francis; parents, Dan and Alice; 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., until service time, Thursday, December 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita, with the family present.

Funeral services will also be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 4, 2008, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita, with Rev. Dan Siepker officiating. Burial will follow services at the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic.

A memorial has been established in Marie's name and may be sent to Rolling Hills Bank, 701 Main St., Anita, IA 50020.
