Lenore Martens, the daughter of Charles and Katie Schafer Scar, was born November 18, 1923 in Madison County, Iowa. She passed away at the Powell Center of Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa, on November 11, 1982.

Lenore spent her childhood on the family farm in Madison County. She attended the Penn Center country school and graduated from Earlham High School in 1941. She then pursued a career in nursing after graduating from Iowa Methodist Hospital as a registered nurse in 1945. Through the years she rendered her services to various local hospitals, Iowa Methodist Hospital, local nursing homes, the Earlham Care Center and finally at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa.

On December 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Eugene W. Martens at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter. They spent their life together farming in Madison County.

Lenore was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene W. Martens, of rural Dexter; daughters, Mrs. Susan Griffith and husband, Dr. Thomas H. of Huntsville, Alabama and Miss Marilyn Martens, of Des Moines; son, Steve Martens, of Earlham; granddaughter, Katie Griffith of Huntsville, Alabama, and brother, Alvin Scar, of Dexter. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were conducted November 14, 1982 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Dexter, Iowa, with Pastor David Rempher officiating. Helen Clausen provided organ music. Pallbearers were Vern Crabbs, Marvin Wedemeyer, Carl Heldt, Herbert Patience, Fred Fillman and Joe Bryant. Honorary pallbearers were Max Sutherland, Roy Jessen, Dorothy Sutherland, R.N., Louella Bryant R.N., Virginia Dewy R.N., Lois Nystrom R.N. and Bethine Springman R.N. Interment was in Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Iowa.

Professional arrangements by McKee Funeral Homes, Earlham and Dexter.
