Mark, son of Jim and Linda Burnett was born in Des Moines, Iowa on August 24, 1963. The family lived in Knoxville, Iowa, where a sister, Kim, was born in 1965. Mark started to school in Knoxville, later transferring to Earlham School in 1970 when the family moved to Earlham. He was active in Boy Scouts and F.F.A. He also enjoyed trapshooting where he received many awards including recognition by the Register and Tribune on their All-State Junior Shooters team. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1981 and attended Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa for one year to study art.

Mark was currently working with his father at Inman Oil Company, a job he held since 1976. At the time of his death, he was also doing layouts for an animated television commercial.

Mark is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda Burnett, and one sister, Kim; his maternal grandparents, Frank and Erma Inman and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Leslie and Myrtle Burnett of Knoxville, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Earlham Friends Church Thursday, September 30, 1982 with the Reverend Eldon Cole officiating. Music was provided by Irene Cole, organist. Pallbearers were Daryl Scar, Richard Johnson, Andy Barnett, Mark Hirsch, Norman Hougham and Jim Price. Honorary pallbearers were Gus Lorenz, Ralph Hunter, Jack Padilla, Von Fletcher, Jack Belknap and Larry Henkle. Interment was at Graveside Lincoln Cemetery in Knoxville, Iowa.
